What are insulation and sound insulation? How are they different?
Insulation is the ability to limit heat transfer (hot/cold) between spaces, helping maintain stable temperature and save energy. Sound insulation is the ability to reduce sound transmission through walls, ceilings, floors to limit noise. Materials may differ: insulation typically uses glass wool, PU/PIR, EPS; sound insulation typically uses mineral wool, high-density glass wool, PE OPP foam, sound-absorbing panels. Some materials can provide both insulation and sound insulation support, but design criteria and installation for each purpose are different.
What is waterproofing and why is it important in construction?
Waterproofing is a set of solutions, materials and processes to prevent water and moisture from penetrating components (roofs, floors, walls, basements, balconies...). The goal is to protect structure, avoid cracking, mold, corrosion and lifespan reduction. Common solutions: torch-on/self-adhesive membranes, liquid PU/PUA membranes, crystalline penetrating cement, waterproof coatings, tapes/water barriers for expansion joints, drainage systems and detailing for wall bases, pipe penetrations. Proper installation process (surface preparation, primer layer, adequate coverage application, water-tight testing) and regular maintenance are key factors to ensure long-term effectiveness.
